Program Overview
The EAP Program at CUD offers a full-time English language program that will accommodate a wide range of ability from elementary to Advanced levels. Students receive 126 hours of intensive instruction that uses an integrated skills approach combining six components of study: speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and study skills. The program aims tot build general English proficiency as well as develop the English skills required in an academic environment. It is designed for students whose goal is to enter the University, but it is also suitable for students who are preparing to enter careers requiring English proficiency, as well as working professionals.
The EAP Program has 5 levels of instruction that are sequenced in terms of language proficiency; Level 001 through to Level 005.
Attendance
Classes meet daily, Sunday through Thursday. Due to the intensive nature of the program, regular attendance in all courses is expected. Students are required to attend at least 70% of all EAP classes. If students miss more than 30% of any course, the University’s attendance policy will be applied as follows;
“Students may be absent for less than 30 % of classes. No justification is required for such absences. Absences for 30 % or more of classes will automatically result in a grade of FNA (Failure for Non Attendance). No justification shall be heard and no excuse of any sort (health related or otherwise) shall be accepted. An FNA grade bars the student form further attending classes, submitting work, or writing final examinations”.
Program Duration
All EAP courses are eighteen hours a week, four hours daily (except Thursday- two hours) and seven weeks in duration. This is a non-credit course.
Progressing through the EAP Program
Students must receive a term grade of 60% or better to be promoted to a higher level in the EAP Program. Students with a grade below 60% in any term in the EAP Program will be required to repeat that level.
In addition, EAP students in Levels 3, 4 and 5 of the program are permitted to register in one general education course of their study plan per semester. EAP students can take a maximum of 9 credit hours while enrolled in the EAP program. EAP students will not be permitted to register for additional courses until they have met CUD’s English requirement. Registration of electives will require the approval of the EAP Chair and will be granted to students with satisfactory academic performance and attendance records.
Exit from the EAP Program
Students study English in the EAP program until they successfully complete level 5 and/or achieve the TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent score required at the time of admission to matriculate into their chosen major.
