February 13th, 2019, CUD Red Theatre: The Canadian University Dubai (CUD) Music Department has proudly unveiled its new Grand Piano with an impressive Inauguration Concert featuring some of the University’s top musical talent.
A varied program of modern, classical and Arabic music was performed before a large appreciative audience of faculty, staff and students, in the presence of Prof. Karim Chelli, President and Vice Chancellor of the University, and other members of Senior Management.
The program was compered by Dr. Efthymios Papatzkis, Assistant Professor at CUD, who introduced each performer and interviewed them about their musical roots and hopes for the future.
The first item on the program was a trio of songs from the CUD Band, Maple Mayhem, followed by three students, Hamid Hamed Mohammed Ahmed, Leen Sharif and Faisal Alkhani, who took turns to play a series of pieces ranging from Chopin, Schubert, Debussy, Beethoven, to Clayderman, Senneville and Fairuz.
The diverse celebration of music also saw the CUD Arabic Band consisting of Momen Mohamed Alsayed and Diaa Eldeen Gamal Alshazly take to the stage to perform a series of local pieces.
The highlight of the concert was a recital by Tamara Sirius, a teacher, composer and performer from Montenegro who played two pieces, “River Flows through You” by Yuruma, followed by her own composition, “Hands.”
In the closing remarks, Prof. Chelli congratulated the performers and organizers of the concert, stating that in recognition of the immense talent at Canadian University Dubai he was committed to providing dedicated space within the University so that the performing arts could develop.
The ceremony concluded with the cutting of a cake in the shape of a piano.
The Music Department’s next event will be a lunchtime piano recital next month.
