FCAS Guest Speaker webinar | Katie Merx

Canadian University Dubai is pleased to welcome Katie Merx, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, to address its journalism and public relations students. The virtual talk will be on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, 4:30pm Merx will be sharing her experiences from the field and how they’ve shaped her current career path in PR.

With over 20 years of experience as a journalist, Merx’s career took a turning point when she, as part of the 1997 Knight Ridder team, won the Pulitzer for community service for reporting on the Grand Forks, North Dakota flood. The flood left the U.S. city devastated, and Merx found herself thrown into covering the disaster.

Being a young journalist in the wake of disaster came with its own challenges, and Merx will share her stories of resilience from covering the floods and the logistical challenges that came with publishing a daily paper even after the newsroom and presses were destroyed in the aftermath.

Merx will also speak about her experience working with a diverse group of editors from around the country and how she’s put together a comprehensive coverage plan even in the most extreme conditions.

After working for both small and large publications ranging from The Detroit Free Press and Bloomberg Business to being a city reporter in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Crains, Katie has several awards under her belt. She has experience covering diverse beats, including healthcare, the automotive industry and local politics.

Her time as a journalist has helped her navigate a career in public relations to which she transitioned into 10 years ago. From interacting with people from all walks of life to meeting tight deadlines, Merx has successfully worked with prestigious clientele, including the University of Michigan, Chrysler, and Marathon Petroleum, where she led financial and corporate communications. As a PR specialist, she has overseen a brand’s internal and external communications, developed social media strategies and built a content creation platform.

Katie has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and sociology from Northwestern University, a master’s degree in media management from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has undergone intensive business reporting training at the University of Pennsylvania – The Wharton School.

Katie currently lives in Toledo, Ohio, US, with her two daughters. Outside of work, she is also an accomplished triathlete, having completed numerous Triathlons in recent years.
