CUD Sets New Standards in Innovation

February 19th Hall C Atrium: Canadian University Dubai’s Innovation, Creativity and Excellence Club hosted an Innovation Day where students from the Faculties of Engineering and Architecture & Interior Design displayed their projects in front of an appreciative audience in the presence of Mr. Buti Saeed Al Ghandi, Chancellor and Prof. Karim Chelli, President and Vice Chancellor of the University.

A total of seventeen projects were displayed and judged by a panel of experts, Dr. Rami El Khatib, Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Ali Hamici, ICT Director, Dr. Sherif Moussa, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Ms. Manal Al Ansari, from Emirates NBD Liv.

In addition to NBD Liv, UAE's first Digital Bank there were representatives from DEWA, who are pioneering a detection system for locating underground cables and pipes and the Ministry of State for Federal National Council Affairs who recently launched an advanced electronic voting system.

The event opened with an address from Zeena Sharafeldin, President of the CUD Student Council, who welcomed the guests and participants. Ms. Al Ansari then addressed the audience encouraging students to always be innovative and to love their ideas. She explained how successful companies do not work in traditional ways but rather find the needs of the customers and direct their efforts to addressing them.

Dr. Rami introduced the judging panel who then proceeded to view each entry and interview the various teams. The results were close, reflecting the high standards of the entries.

In first place winning a trophy and cash prize of AED 1,500 was an ROV submarine. Team members were Esraa Mustapha, Atiq Yousuf Atiq and Hadi Osama, supervised by Dr. Ahmed Al Gindy. The runner up, winning a trophy and cash prize of AED 1,000 was an autonomous RFI drone designed for use in border security with team members Osama Tarek and Saif Mohammed Sultan supervised by Dr. Ziad El Khatib. In third place, also winning a trophy with a cash prize of AED 500 was a project designed to provide an autonomous integrated farming system with team members Farouk Dalhatu, Nelson Egharevba, Jasem Salman and Umar Uba Abubakar Their supervisor was Dr. Moayad Aloqaily.

At a side event, Assistant Professor, Dr. Joanna Seraphim, ran a competition to design a greetings card design reflecting the theme of Innovation, which was won by Zaineh’s Group.

The event concluded with the presentation of the prizes.
