Canadian University of Dubai hosts WMNC'13

This is an important week for the Canadian University of Dubai as we host our second international conference, WMNC'13, being held at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai April 23rd - 25th.

WMNC'13 is the world's leading discussion forum for researchers, practitioners and students interested in new developments in mobile and wireless networks, services, applications and mobile computing. Some 134 research papers will be presented and discussed by a panel of over 80 experts.

Education and business leaders from the public and private sectors from across the UAE will attend WMNC'13 to discuss brand new research that will revolutionize the future of wireless and mobile networking usage and technology.

Mr. Buti Saeed al Ghandi, Chancellor of the Canadian University of Dubai stated "As an educational institution it is our social responsibility to support the initiatives of Government throughout the UAE. Mobile and wireless technologies play a key role in these initiatives so we are pleased to be able to bring together world-class experts and Government stakeholders for discussion and presentations that are very relevant to Dubai's future growth."

On behalf of the University we would like to thank our faculty, staff and students involved in running and organizing this prestigious international conference. A special thanks to Dr. Rachid Benlamri who as the General Chair of the conference was the driving force behind many of the efforts responsible for its success. Another successful year at GETEX 2013!

Looks like all the hard work paid off; our presence at the Gulf Education & Training Exhibition (GETEX) last week proved to be hugely successful. Our attractive stall set us apart and our diverse multilingual student representatives did a wonderful job interacting with potential students.

GETEX is one of the most prominent Educational Fairs in the region and gives local and International Universities a platform to showcase their program offerings and engage prospective students.

Chancellor Mr. Buti Al Ghandi and Communication Professor Dr. Taleb Kanaan had the opportunity to host His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Social Development, at our display as he visited the event on Wednesday morning.

Our team had loads of exciting activities planned and visitors had a great time participating in "Win Without Words", an interactive competition emphasizing the importance of signs and body language in communication.

Participants were asked to convey messages written on hidden placards using only sign language and gestures. Hiba Jama Eldine won first place, Nashwa and Melvin came in second and third respectively.

On the last day of the exhibition, Abdelrahman from our School of Engineering faced off against Heriot-Watt Dubai's strongest man in a battle of wills! Check out the Facebook video for all the action: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=572517292779139 We would like to extend a warm thank you to all the members of our Staff and Faculty and of course our students for all their hard work that contributed toward making GETEX '13 a massive success for the University

Interior Design students' take Venice and Milan by storm!

Earlier in April, our Interior Design students visited Venice and Milan on an educational fieldtrip to Italy organized by faculty member Mr. Serkan Gunay. During the four day trip, students had a chance to explore Italy and learn about the influence of architecture and design from the Renaissance and Baroque period in modern day. Interior Design students visited 'Murano' and 'Burano'; islands known for their preservation of genuine craftsmanship.

Our eager students toured workshops to see first-hand the famous glass making process and fine crystal art Murano is known so well for.

Lace is to Burano what glass is to Murano; and our students visited one of the Island's most renowned traditional lace-making centers.

The women of Burano are considered the best in Italy at creating all kinds of fine lace items, from clothing to fashion accessories (picture right)

The trip also included a tour of the world famous Milan Cathedral (Third Largest in the world) and the Modern Art Museum; where Interior Design majors had a chance to view remarkable art installations and designer furniture pieces

And of course, no visit to Italy is complete without visiting the "Galleria"; our students concluded their trip by hitting the stores at Italy's oldest shopping mall! (Picture left)

School of Environment and Health students organize educational BBQ

On April 11thstudents from the School of Environment and Health organized an educational BBQ trip to Jumeirah Beach Park.

The objective of the BBQ was to give Environment and Health students a chance to learn about managing food quality control through a hands-on approach, all while having fun!

Students worked as a team to raise funds for the event and implement 'HACCP principles' during the BBQ by following proper storage, handling, cooking and cleaning procedures.

HACCP is a preventive approach to food safety that focuses on reducing health risks caused due to any hazards in production that may cause the finished product to be unsafe.

During the BBQ, students' implementation of the principles was assessed by experts from 'Trakhees'- Regulatory Authority of Environment Safety and Health in the U.A.E (EHS). Detailed notes were from the evaluation and feedback was communicated with the students to add value to the learning process.

The event was planned and organized with the support of Professor Ms. Maisoun Al Sharif who teaches Food Quality and Control here at the University. She stated "The experience was an extremely positive one for me and the students were motivated to show their knowledge in practical terms. In addition to achieving learning objectives, the event facilitated social integration within the School of Environment and Health (SEHS) due to the high level of peer interaction."
