CUD’s Research Focuses on Societal Impacts | Redefining the Future

CUD is committed to research, with sustainability and climate change at the core of the mission to redefine the future. CUD’s scholars and faculty are dedicated to pioneering innovative solutions to pressing global challenges. Here are few examples.

1. Attitudes towards climate change and energy sources in oil exporters.

Contu Davide, Kaya Ozgur, Kaya Ilker (2021) Attitudes towards climate change and energy sources in oil exporters. Energy Strategy Reviews 38, 100732 (SDG 13). Switching to energy mixes that use more non-fossil fuels is critical to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to tackle climate change. Climate change poses a major challenge to oil exporting Gulf countries, like the rest of the world, but research on human views on energy and climate change is limited. We aim to fill this gap by focusing on the UAE, a nation with a peculiar demographic composition that includes an overwhelming proportion of expatriates and transitions towards green and nuclear resources.

2. Prioritizing climate change actions post COVID-19 amongst university students; a Q methodology perspective in the United Arab Emirates.

Takshe Aseel, Lovett Jon, Stenner Paul, Contu Davide, Weber Noelia (2022) Prioritizing climate change actions post COVID-19 amongst university students; a Q methodology perspective in the United Arab Emirates. International Journal of Global Warming 26(1) (SDG 3, 8, 9, 13, 17). The COVID-19 pandemic caused strict regulations to lower transmission rates. Industries were shut down, people were in lockdown, and travel was curtailed. Restrictions were in effect for an enough period for people's behaviour to change. For example, online meetings rather than needing to travel. This opens the possibility for alterations to the perception that it is possible to commit to effective climate change actions. A Q methodology study was conducted to analyse how 33 university environmental students across the United Arab Emirates perceive the importance of prioritising climate change actions post-pandemic. Statistical analysis yielded four discourses.

3. Green leadership and pro-environmental behavior: a moderated mediation model with rewards, self-efficacy and training.

Ahuja Jaya, Yadav Mohit, Sergio Rommel (2022) Green leadership and pro-environmental behavior: a moderated mediation model with rewards, self-efficacy and training. International Journal of Ethics and Systems (SDG 10, 16). The purpose of this study is to identify the association between environmental leadership (EL) and pro-environmental behaviour among the middle-level employees in iron and steel manufacturing companies. The study further emphasizes on mediation of the relationship by green rewards and green self-efficacy in EL and pro-environmental behaviour relationship, moderated by green training.

4. Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) in the age of artificial intelligence (AI) – opportunities, threats, and the way forward

Agata Stachowicz-Stanusch, Wolfgang Amann, Radha Sharma, Fauzia Jabeen (2021) Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) in the age of artificial intelligence (AI) – opportunities, threats, and the way forward (SDG 4, 8, 9, 11, 16, 17). Information Age Publishing, USA. This book, initiated and led by Agata Stachowicz-Stanusch, is authored by a range of international experts with a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives. These contributions provide valuable insights into how AI can aid in the implementation of PRME, the potential effects of AI on the field of business education, the type of curriculum which should be taught in business during the age of AI, and which skills are most essential for future success.

5. Political governance, corruption perceptions index, and national dynamic energy efficiency.

Lu Wen-Min, Kweh Qian Long, Nourani Mohammad, Lin Cheng-Yi (2021) Political governance, corruption perceptions index, and national dynamic energy efficiency. Journal of Cleaner Production 295, 216505 (SDG 7, 16). This study estimates national dynamic energy efficiency of 49 countries for the period of 2007–2016 by using a dynamic data envelopment analysis model and explores (i) the relationships between the CPI and national dynamic energy efficiency, (ii) political governance and CPI, (iii) political governance and dynamic energy efficiency, and (iv) the mediating role of the CPI on the association between political governance and national dynamic energy efficiency.

6. A review of the environmental implications of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Arab Emirates.

Alalawi Shaikha, Issa Sahar, Takshe Aseel, ElBarazi Iffat (2022) A review of the environmental implications of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Arab Emirates. Environmental Challenges 8, 100561 (SDG 3, 17). This paper reviews the environmental implications associated with the COVID-19 pandemic at the individual and community levels in the UAE. The positive effects emanating from the pandemic include improved air quality and reduced contamination of public spaces with pollutants. On the other hand, far-reaching negative effects include poor disposal of medical plastic waste and facemasks and the rise in unhygienic health practices amongst residents of UAE.
