Dr. Mnaouer awarded $900,000 research grant
Dr. Adel Ben Mnaouer is among a team of academic experts that has secured a $900,000 grant from the Qatar Foundation to explore the application of sensor technology in protecting physical assets. The project is set to develop an innovative Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system to help maintain a safe and sustainable environment by developing a system that detects and warns of potential structural failures or threats.

New two-year program in food safety launched
CUD is to launch a new Associate Degree in Food Safety in response to a growing demand for trained professionals in the field. The two-year program, developed in collaboration with Dubai Municipality, has been accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and is due to admit its first cohort of students in August this year.

CEIC signs MoU with Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence
The Centre of Excellence for Innovation and Creativity and Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence have joined forces to take forward a number of collaborative strategies to support the advancement of the green economy in Dubai. The agreement was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at a recent ceremony hosted at CUD.

SAID featured at international design exhibition
A team of CUD students, along with Assistant Professor, Ms. Sophie Johnson, have featured at the four-day INDEX International Design Exhibition held recently at Dubai World Trade Centre. The students were chosen to take part as interns to support the event management team, while Ms. Johnson was selected as a judge for the MENA Interior Design & Architecture Awards, and was also among the speakers at the event.

Dr. Shaban collaborates in Quran-inspired research
Dr. Marwan Shaban is to collaborate on a ground-breaking research project inspired by a miracle portrayed in the Holy Quran. The research, which will be conducted in partnership with the University of Malaysia Perlis, will look into the antiseptic qualities of pumpkin, with a view to developing a new, organic form of pesticide that can replace traditional chemical treatments.

Math professors’ journal publishes conference proceedings
The Gulf Journal of Mathematics, established by CUD professors Dr. Firuz Kamalov and Dr. Ho Hon Leung, has been selected to publish the proceedings of an international math conference held in the region. The eighth volume of the Journal will carry the selected papers from the International Workshop in Algebra and its Applications, a testament to the publication’s growing stature in the academic world.

Among those honoured at the event were students Mohammed Baziyad, Ahmed Farrag and Moad Kawan, who made it to the finals of this year’s UAE m-Government Service Awards with their innovative application, SmartCart.

Saygin Yalcin wins Enterprise Agility Award
Saygin Yalcin, a visiting lecturer in entrepreneurship at CUD and Founder and CEO of SellAnyCar.com, has picked up the Award for Tech Innovator of the Year at the Saudi Arabia Enterprise Agility Awards 2015. He received the Award from Khaled Al-Mugairen, Vice Chairman of Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in the presence of Prince Khaled Bin Alwalid Bin Talal.

Graduation performance featured at President’s Cup
A music performance especially commissioned for the CUD 2015 graduation ceremony has been featured as part of this year’s President’s Cup football final held recently at the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, Al Ain. The song and dance performance, ‘Ento Al7ema’, was featured centre stage during the half-time interval at this year’s competition finale.

Engineering students visit Dubai Police HQ
A group of students from the School of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology has been given exclusive access to the Dubai Police Command Centre, in a private field trip to the force’s headquarters in the City. During the visit, the students were offered the opportunity to witness first-hand the operations of the Emergency Response Division and see the systems they have in place.
