Board of Trustees

The Canadian University Dubai Board of Trustees leads the institution’s strategic development, directed by our guiding principle: to deliver a world-class Canadian higher education experience in the UAE.

Alongside the University’s founders, we are privileged to have amongst our Board some of Canada’s most notable higher education experts and policy makers, who guide us in our pursuit of excellence.

“Sustainability is a defining pillar of our institutional governance and long-term strategic vision. It is embedded in how we lead, how we operate, and how we measure success, guided by the principles of responsible environmental stewardship, social progress, and ethical governance.

This commitment is reinforced through institutional oversight at the highest levels, ensuring accountability and alignment with long-term priorities, reinforced through rigorous monitoring and transparent reporting that reflects our responsibility to both society and future generations.

In alignment with the UAE’s national agenda, we are advancing initiatives that deliver lasting impact through education, research, and innovation, while contributing to Dubai’s position as a global hub for sustainable development and responsible leadership.

Through sustained collaboration with our partners across government, industry, and the community, we will continue to strengthen our role in shaping a resilient and inclusive society. We view sustainability not only as a strategic priority, but as a long-term responsibility, one that defines the legacy we build and the future we shape for generations to come.”

Mr. Buti Saeed Al Ghandi, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Emirates Investment and Development PSC, UAE

“At Canadian University Dubai, sustainability is embedded within our institutional governance and strategic decision-making, guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the Principles for Responsible Management Education, and globally recognized ESG standards, including the Global Reporting Initiative.

Our approach is underpinned by robust structures that ensure accountability, transparency, and continuous performance evaluation across environmental, social, and institutional dimensions. Through integrated policies, cross-functional oversight, and data-driven reporting, we align our academic, research, and operational activities with national priorities and international sustainability benchmarks.

As a research-driven institution, we serve as a hub for interdisciplinary inquiry and innovation, advancing evidence-based solutions to global challenges such as climate change, sustainable urban development, and resource efficiency. Our research agenda is strategically positioned to generate and translate knowledge that informs policy, industry, and society.

In line with the UAE’s forward-looking sustainability agenda and Canada’s progressive sustainability vision, we advance responsible innovation, ethical leadership, and resource-efficient systems. By embedding these principles across governance, research, and education, we drive measurable impact, strengthen institutional resilience, and empower our community to contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable global future.”

Prof. Karim Chelli, President & Vice-Chancellor, Canadian University Dubai

“Sustainability is not a distant ambition—it is a strategic imperative that must be embedded across governance, education, and innovation. Enduring progress is achieved when environmental stewardship informs decision-making at every level, ensuring that economic and societal advancement remain aligned with the long-term interests of future generations. At Canadian University Dubai, this commitment is reflected in cultivating leaders who recognize sustainability not as an option, but as a fundamental responsibility to society and the global community.”

Hon. Sheila Copps, PC, OC, Former Heritage Minister, Environment Minister & Deputy PM of Canada

“I have spent almost forty years watching the gap widen between what climate science tells us about our changing world and what institutions are willing to do about it. At Canadian University Dubai, we are trying to close that gap — not through declarations, but through the hard, patient work of research, measurement, and education. The MENA region will experience some of the most severe consequences of a warming planet, and it deserves an institution that takes that seriously at every level, from the laboratory to the lecture hall to the policy table. Environmental commitment is not a branding exercise. It is a moral obligation, and one that the Canadian University Dubai has chosen to meet.”
