September 5th, 2016: As part of Design Week 2016, Canadian University Dubai (CUD) is hosting a competition that will challenge university students to use their creativity to showcase the Dubai Smart City Initiative.
Open to all universities across Dubai, the challenge features three options for entrants hoping to demonstrate their design flair. The competition will be judged by leading design professionals, including Ignacio Nieto de le Cal, Director of BIA Design, and Jorge Rangel, Director of Jorge Rangel Interiors.
As part of Dubai’s Silicon Park project, it is anticipated that charging docks for smart devices will be incorporated into the streetlights. Option one challenges students to design a cover/pod incorporating the streetlight and allowing users time to interact with the technology in Dubai’s climate.
Also anticipated as part of the Silicon Park project are commercial and residential areas, running and cycling tracks, a shopping centre, etc. The second design option is to create a way-finding pattern that would be used as a path/flooring and which could be manipulated with colour or scale. The pattern must embrace tradition and sustainable materials, and consider the urban landscape of this type of project.
The third option is to design a car shelter that covers two electric car docking stations, which will be positioned around the Park, as well as in residential areas. This device must embrace tradition and technology at the same time.
After the judges’ evaluation, the top ten competition entries will be displayed at an exhibition hosted by CUD during Dubai Design Week, from October 24th to 29th. The top three designers will win career-defining internships with some of the leading Dubai-based design companies.
Registration for the competition is open until September 25th. Contact sophie@cud.ac.ae for further information.
