Global Seminar on Research Into Music Education

DUBAI 01/05/2017 – Canadian University Dubai recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Society of Music Education (ISME) Research Commission that will see the University host the organizations 27th International Seminar on Research in Music Education in July 2018, in cooperation with the Dubai Tourism Authority. The seminar will also mark the Research Commission’s 50th Anniversary. The ISME Research Commission is the most established gathering of international music education researchers of its kind in the world.

The Research Commission seminar brings together a broad range of participants from the various branches of music including music psychology, performance, theory, composition, sociology, and musicology in order to present and examine new research on important issues facing music education worldwide and develop, refine and demonstrate a range of research approaches, methods and techniques for critically examining issues in music education.

Recent ISME Research Commission Seminars have included a broad range of research topics such as the effects of music on refugee children in Southeast Asia, and the mechanisms linking mediated music lesson and language proficiency among Kindergarten children of migrant workers, as well as a study on pre-teen musical preferences and its effects on language presentation and cultural identification. They’ve explored experimental studies, surveys, case studies, qualitative approaches, and biographical and historical research. Particularly the participants like to focus on the examination of learning and development of musical behaviors and understanding in relation to particular musical genres and socio-cultural contexts.

The MOU was organized by Canadian University Dubai Assistant Professor in Educational Neuroscience, Dr. Efthymios Papatzikis, who is currently conducting research on brain development and perception through music and sound.

"This exciting seminar will bring together leaders in music research and education from around the world,” said Dr. Papatzikis. “It will not only provide a platform for discussion and collaboration, but it will also provide these leading minds with an opportunity to explore Dubai, meet with our students, and learn about some of the exciting projects and research we are engaged in at Canadian University Dubai. It will certainly be an interesting and engaging seminar.”

Evelyn K. Orman, EdD, Visiting Distinguished Professor of Music Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and 2016-2018 Chair, of the International Society of Music Education Research Commission, who signed the MOU on behalf of the ISME Research Commission said “On behalf of the commissioners for the International Society of Music Education (ISME) Research Commission, I am delighted the Canadian University Dubai has agreed to host the 50th anniversary seminar of the commission. I am especially grateful to Dr. Efthymios Papatzikis, without his skill and expertise none ifof this would have been possible. While there is still much work to be done, there is already a great deal of international enthusiasm about our hosts, our visit to Dubai and of course having an intellectually stimulating week of research presented and discussed by some of the finest international scholars in music education.”
