Biography

Stephen de Filippo is an Australian composer and multimedia artist from Wadandi country in southwestern Australia. His work explores place, memory, travel, and cultural identity through field recording, performance, and multimedia.

Originally rooted in score-based composition, Stephen’s practice has expanded into electro-acoustic forms, incorporating experimental performance techniques, dense soundscapes, live electronics, and environmental recordings. His projects span chamber music, sound installations, and interdisciplinary collaborations, often creating site-responsive works that connect audiences with their environments.

Stephen’s musicological research investigates cultural cringe in Australian classical music, examining how composers express colonial anxieties. This research was supported through a fellowship at Harvard University’s Department of Music, funded by the Ian Potter Cultural Trust and Harvard’s Institute of Australian Studies.

He has presented work in concert halls, galleries, and experimental settings across the United States, Australia, and Europe. His compositions often grow from field recordings and environmental sound, developed into detailed notated scores, sound installations, and collaborative multimedia projects.
