The event open only to students from the School of Engineering kicked off with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Hichem Ben El Mechaiekh, Dean of Engineering and Architecture followed by Dr. Sherif Moussa, Head of School.

Hosted by Ms.Rola Dukhan, one of the university’s English language lecturers, and attended by over 50 students, Dr. Sherif’s welcome speech congratulated the student’s on choosing engineering as their field of study and referred to the many strengths of the university which distinguished it from other institutions in the country; primarily its commitment to creating a family oriented community that provided guidance, support, and assistance to its student community through highly qualified faculty.

He encouraged students to participate in everything available to them especially through the many clubs on campus such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE and the Robotics Club while urging them to also reach beyond the confines of the engineering department to engage and learn from students in other programs.Dr. Sherif’s welcome address was followed by an informative introduction to the faculty’s members who echoed his sentiments.

Participants also heard from Shahira Khan and Mehak and Fatima Ashfaq Mehmood Butt; two senior engineering students who spoke of their positive experience in the program and stressed that there would always be someone from the faculty to support the students with whatever they needed. They also encouraged new students to get involved in faculty or campus activities as it was a great way to meet for them to meet new friends and build their networks.

Student Nikita Mankovskii spoke on behalf of the school’s clubs and outlined the many activities and competitions that students engaged in annually. Some of the activities she spoke of were the launching of the new (CUD) student branch of (IEEE) to connect aspiring technologists with professionals and organizations in the field with the IEEE Student Branch taking part in two recent site visits; a CUD team winning the UAE national finals of the GCC Robotics Challenge for the second year in a row and the Robotics Club having recently organized a High School Robot Challenge.
