Faculty of Engineering Hold Seminar on Interactions of Particles with Matter

Sunday, December 10 - Room B-203: The Faculty of Engineering hosted a seminar entitled “Interactions of Particles with Matter: the Art of Making Visible the Invisible”

The Seminar was facilitated by Dr. Adriano Di Giovanni, PhD in particle physics, a research scientist at the Astro Particle Lab, New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD). and attended by students and faculty from the University.

The focus of the seminar was to give a short introduction on Particle Physics (and its use) from the point of view of detector technology and hardware requirements of the most recent and promising photo sensor available  off-the-shelf.

Dr. Giovanni’s research is mainly focused at testing and developing detection techniques for dark matter and neutrino experiments, where extremely low radioactive background and low temperature are usually required. He is presently working on an advanced detection technique based on the use of multi-pixel photon counters sensitive to the vacuum Ultra Violet (VUV) wavelength range.

Dr. Giovanni is also interested in gamma spectroscopy, X-ray Fluorescence elemental analysis for Cultural Heritage, cosmic rays detection and muon tomography.
