March 19, 2018, Block B: The CUD Robotics Club organized its second annual Robotics Competition with great success. The event was organized under the supervision of Dr. Sherif Moussa, Head of the Department of Engineering. A total of ten schools registered for the competition.
This year, the team of Year 10 students from GEMS Modern Academy took first, narrowly edging out their own seniors. Third place went to Digi-minds from Pristine Private School.
The judges of the robotics competition were Dr. Sherif, Mr. Ali Hamici from the IT Department and Dr. Firuz Kamalov.
The competition was divided into three events: following the line, placing an object and, finally, a good old-fashioned robot fight!
The prizes were handed out by Dr. Karim Chelli, President and Vice Chancellor of CUD. During his speech, he thanked the organizers and the participants. He referred to opportunities for electronics students to secure guaranteed places in Queens University in Canada, where the rejection rate for Canadian students is 95%.
In congratulating the teams, Dr. Karim said that although there had to be a first-place team, all participants should consider themselves winners and hoped that for future contests of this sort, the talent in Dubai might be pitched against students invited over from Canada for the competition.
Dr. Sherif said he was very impressed by the quality of the competing teams and highlighted the importance of investing resources in technology education. He also justified the decision by CUD to launch the new electrical engineering courses, particularly Mechatronics.
