CUD Students Show Outstanding Performance in UAE National Level Competitions

The achievements of Ahmad Almarouf and Ibrahim Ahmed reflect the strength of our cyber security program.

June 19th, 2024, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE): In today’s age, cyber security plays a crucial role globally in safeguarding sensitive information and digital infrastructures. Canadian University Dubai (CUD) is committed to providing our students with the knowledge and skills to excel in this challenging field. The result of this commitment is evident in the remarkable achievements of our School of Engineering, Applied Science & Technology students Ahmad Almarouf and Ibrahim Ahmed.

The students participated in various national competitions such as the prestigious Cyber Security CTF Competition at Abu Dhabi University, where they achieved first place out of 20 teams, and the CTF competition at Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), where they secured fourth place out of 50 teams.

In the fall of 2023, the CUD Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security program began preparations to host CUD’s first Capture the Flag (CTF) competition to hone our students’ cyber security skills. Approximately 30 students participated in weekly two-hour long sessions from October 2023 to March 2024 as part of the training. These sessions culminated in the CUD Cyber Security Competition Finale in March, where Ahmad and Ibrahim secured second place.

Following this achievement, Ahmad continued his journey in cyber security by participating in the Cyber Security CTF Competition held at Abu Dhabi University, powered by Anxinsec. This event was part of Cyber Security Day, featuring over 20 teams. The competition featured diverse challenges, including web, forensics, crypto, network and Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) categories. Despite the fierce competition, the team secured first place, showing exceptional teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The duo then participated in a CTF competition at Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), sponsored by Exploit3rs. Out of 50 teams, their team secured fourth place. The competition featured challenges spanning web exploitation, OSINT, crypto, forensics, and network categories. Their consistent performance in these competitions demonstrates their growing expertise and technical skills.

The mentorship and guidance of our faculty, including Dr. Tamer Mohamed, BSc. in Cybersecurity Program Coordinator, and Mr. Ahmed Seyam, Lab Instructor, has been invaluable in preparing the students for these challenges. Their expertise and support played a crucial role in their success.

Dr. Tamer Mohamed expressed pride in Ahmad and Ibrahim’s achievements, citing them as examples of the caliber of CUD students. He also emphasized the importance of these competitions, noting how it helps in enhancing students’ practical skills preparing them ready for the field, ”Participating in cyber security events gives students a unique opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios, improving their problem-solving skills and teamwork. I advise our students to engage in co-curricular activities such as Cyber Security Club and Software Engineering Club to complement classroom learning and to enhance technical skills”.

Ahmad Almarouf and Ibrahim Ahmed's accomplishments highlight the strength of CUD’s cyber security program. Their success further demonstrates the university’s dedication to providing a well-rounded education to succeed in this challenging field. With the support of renowned faculty and mentors such as Dr. Tamer Mohamed and Mr. Ahmed Seyam, CUD is committed to preparing students for the challenges of the cyber security industry.
