Dr. Firuz Kamalov, Professor of Mathematics and Machine Learning at Canadian University Dubai (CUD) has presented his pioneering research at this year’s Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education conference (ITiCSE 2026). Dr. Kamalov’s paper ‘How Can Accessibility in Computing Education Be Improved Through HCI Research?’, was selected as part of the conference's Broadening Participation theme.
As Europe's premier and largest conference dedicated to computing and informatics education, ITiCSE is internationally renowned as a leading forum for advancing research and innovation in the field. Staged at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, Spain, this year’s edition attracted an outstanding community of researchers, educators, and thought leaders from around the world. Dr. Kamalov’s paper explored how established methodologies from Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) can help address longstanding challenges in making computing education more accessible and inclusive for learners with diverse sensory, motor, cognitive, and linguistic needs. The research argues that meaningful progress requires a design-driven, evidence-based approach that integrates accessibility into the core computing curriculum, supports educators through participatory co-design, and develops inclusive learning tools informed by multimodal interaction research.
