May 1st, 2016: A section of the Canadian University Dubai (CUD) campus has been transformed into a living laboratory, to help students in the School of Architecture and Interior Design to develop their sense of space.
The parking area to the rear of Hall C of the campus has been given an artistic makeover, with the floor space being painted to create a series of ‘rooms’, which represent a real-life living area. The transformation of the space has been done to support first and second year students to grasp the importance of dimensions and space in the design process.
The living lab was launched with a full simulation by students and faculty from the school, who demonstrated the scope and functionality of the space through various domestic-related activities.
Dr. Hoshiar Nooraddin, Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture and Interior Design, who came up with the idea of the living lab, said, “The aim is to provide students with a practical demonstration of how space can be optimized in the design process. Too often, the use of space is exaggerated, and by extension, there is an overuse of natural resources, which can impact upon the wider physical environment.”
Second year architecture student Mariam Jabbar said, “This is a great initiative that gives us an important lesson in sustainability, as well as providing a new and interesting space on the University campus.”
