November 1st, 2016: The second annual Library Week event hosted by Canadian University Dubai (CUD) has this year celebrated the UAE Year of Reading 2016.
Declared by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Year of Reading set out to create a generation of book lovers and to consolidate the UAE’s position as a global capital for culture and knowledge. CUD’s Library Week celebrated and supported this initiative through a range of activities to engage the entire university community under the theme ‘Read and Inspire’.
Led by CUD Librarian, Ms. Menchie Armillo, the library team hosted quizzes, competitions, and a book fair, as well as training sessions for students and faculty, to encourage all library users to engage with the wealth of materials available at CUD’s Learning Resource Centre.
The Library Week culminated in an awards ceremony presided over by CUD President, Pr. Karim Chelli. Delivering a keynote speech at the ceremony was Sokaina Al Haseny, Lecturer in the School of Communication and Media Studies.
Reflecting on the importance of reading, Ms. Al Haseny said, “Reading can show you a different world – it can take you somewhere you have never been. When you go that far you cannot really be entirely content anymore with the world you were raised in. Discontent is a good thing. Discontented people can modify and inspire improvement for their worlds, leaving them a better and a different place.”
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of awards to the winners of the Library Week competitions:
