Students Debate and Demonstrate Challenges of Electronic Waste

December 5th, 2016: Students from the School of Public Health & Health Sciences at Canadian University Dubai (CUD) have been discussing the challenges presented by the growing volume of electronic waste produced, at the 2016 Inter-College Public Speaking Competition organized by Emirates Environmental Group (EEG).

Under the supervision of Dr. Rami El Khatib, Associate Professor in School of Public Health & Health Sciences, and with the support of Dr. Ghada Abaido, Assistant Professor in School of Communication & Media Studies, the team of Amina Naushad, Yvonne Ruhumbika, Shanice Da Costa, Zenah al Saraeji, and Iqra Ghani addressed the subject ‘E-Waste: Where’s the Green?’ in the 16th edition of the annual Competition.

As part of the team’s preparation for the event they ran an e-waste collection campaign at CUD, where students, staff and faculty contributed by gathering e-waste from their homes, offices, and cars. Students from the School of Architecture & Interior Design then went on to create a sculpture from the e-waste collected.

The CUD students’ presentation and activities attracted significant attention and commendation, with the team receiving an excellent evaluation from the panel of environmental experts who emphasized the importance of such a campaign.

The EEG Speaking Competition began in 2001 targeting students throughout the GCC and MENA region, with the aim of nurturing positive attitudes among young people towards the future sustainability of environmental resources.
