CUD Launches IEEE Student Branch

February 13th, 2017: The School of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology has celebrated the launch of the new Canadian University Dubai (CUD) Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) student branch, to connect aspiring technologists with professionals and organizations in the field.

The branch has been formed by a volunteering student committee consisting of Chair, Shaheera Khan; Vice Chair, Yaqob Wael; Secretary, Mehak Ashfaq; and Treasurer, Amro Mossad; with the support of members of faculty from the School.

IEEE is the world’s largest professional association, dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of society. CUD joins a network of over 900 universities in the region that hosts a student branch, with the aim of providing engineering students with opportunities to take part in special programs, projects and activities, and to engage in professional networking.

The launch was marked with a special event that gathered students and faculty from each the University’s three undergraduate engineering programs, along with members of the wider CUD community. Speaking at the event, branch Chair, Shaheera Khan, promised an exciting program of activities ahead.

She said, “One of our main aims is to connect students with industry and we have already undertaken fieldtrips to leading technology firms such as Huawei and Intel. There will be more site visits to come this semester, as well as opportunities for students to learn more in our technical workshops and to get together and have fun in our recreational activities.”

With more than 3,000 divisions worldwide, the IEEE student branch model also promotes networking on an international scale, helping students to make global connections that could help them to develop their professional identity and access support from a worldwide community of members.

Speaking on behalf of the faculty at the launch event, Chair of Network Engineering, Dr. Sherif Moussa, encouraged students to make the most of the opportunities presented by the new organization; to visit companies, take part in competitions and gain industry insights that would give them the edge in their future career.
