Biography
Sophie A. Johnson combines her knowledge in design practice, research, and education. Beginning her professional journey in interior design and bespoke furniture making, she later transitioned to the field of teaching. With more than two decades of experience, she has contributed to education at various levels, from undergraduate to postgraduate, and has been an instructor at prominent design institutions in London, including Ravensbourne University, University of the Arts London: Chelsea School of Art, Central St Martins, and Wimbledon.
More than ten years ago, with a move to the United Arab Emirates, she joined the Department of Interior Design at Canadian University Dubai. During this time Sophie has supervised the progress of over 65 graduation students, established relationships with industry partners to facilitate internships and entry-level positions, and provided support to students participating in competitions. Sophie actively contributes to the Teaching and Learning Committee and serves as an External Course Moderator for other universities in the Gulf region. Presently, she is pursuing a Ph.D. at the Royal College of Art. This practice-led Ph.D. raises questions about the role of design thinking within the creative process.
Research and Conferences:
- Urban Planning Journal, Housing Norms and Standards: Domesticity as Nation Building, December 2023.
- Exploring New Possibilities to Better Understand Domesticity Contribution at the Relevance of Doctoral Research in Architecture, Anglia Ruskin University, July 2023.
