In collaboration with Artist: Charlie Koolhaas (UAE / Netherlands)

In this work, the School of Architecture and Interior Design at Canadian University Dubai invited artist Charlie Koolhaas to collaborate on her ongoing Foto-Couture project. The initiative explores the intersection of photography, architecture, and fashion, transforming the city’s built environment into wearable archives that express both personal and national identities.

Reflected Futures:
The Sheikh Zayed Line

The abaya, recognized today as a central element of Emirati women’s national dress, is a culturally embedded garment that signifies modesty, social identity, and continuity of tradition. Its historical presence across the Arabian Peninsula reflects a longstanding system of values surrounding dignity, privacy, and communal belonging. Over time, the abaya has adapted in form and aesthetic expression while retaining its symbolic function. Within the context of the United Arab Emirates’ rapid development, the abaya has persisted as a visible marker of cultural heritage, illustrating how sartorial traditions can flourish alongside societal transformation while preserving their foundational meaning. As such, it represents an interplay between heritage and modernity, demonstrating the enduring role of dress in articulating national identity and cultural resilience.

To complement the abaya, which symbolizes Emirati values of grace and continuity, the second garment draws inspiration from the Chinese qipao, a traditional dress associated with refinement, modesty, and cultural identity. The qipao, also known as the cheongsam, traces its origins to the long robes worn by Manchu women during the Qing dynasty. It began as a loose, flowing garment before evolving in 1920s Shanghai into the slim-fitting, high-collared silhouette known today, blending traditional Chinese motifs, such as embroidery and mandarin collars, with contemporary tailoring influences.
