Architecture Professor’s Butterfly House Showcased at International Conference

October 26th, 2015: Professor of architecture, Mr. Luca Donner, has once again seen his ground-breaking design work showcased on the international stage, as his unique Butterfly House has been shortlisted among the finalists in the 2A Asia Architecture Awards 2015.

The visually striking design reinvents the V-shaped silhouette butterfly roof that emerged as an alternative to traditional rooftop styles in the 1930s. It was recognized in the residential category of the design competition, which has been established by the regional architecture magazine to celebrate the importance of social and cultural identity in Asian architecture. The judging was conducted by a panel of esteemed architects: Romi Khosla, Seung H Sang, Bahram Shirdel and Yavuz Selim Sepin.

The design was on display at the inaugural 2A Asia Architecture conference held recently at Istanbul Technical University, Turkey. Under the theme ‘Asia Architecture on the Way of Transition’, the conference brought together academics and practitioners to share their ideas and experiences relating to contemporary architecture in Asia.

Produced in collaboration with CUD Adjunct Professor, Ms. Francesca Sorcinelli, the Butterfly House is a home designed to nestle among the green hills outside Seoul, and is deeply influenced by its cultural and environmental context. Following the principles of Feng Shui, it blends with its surroundings and utilizes cost-effective technological solutions, natural ventilation, high insulation, and large windows, to create a ‘house system’ that promotes energy efficiency and affordability.

The design was also recently cited by architecture blogger Zoe Cooper in her article ‘The Butterfly Effect: 7 reinterpretations of a Mid-Century Classic’, as a striking modern example of the iconic architectural feature.

It is among a number of works by Donner that have been showcased across the international architecture community, which include ten other residential developments featuring in the book ‘Housing (Single Family, Mixed Use Complex, Multi Family, Social)’ produced by DAMDI Publishing Co of Seoul, South Korea.
