September 13th, 2015: The unique design work of Canadian University Dubai (CUD) architecture professor, Mr. Luca Donner, has been featured in a recent book that showcases international talent in the sector.
Ten of Donner's most visionary designs, produced in collaboration with CUD Adjunct Professor, Ms. Francesca Sorcinelli, were selected to feature in the book "Housing (Single Family, Mixed Use Complex, Multi Family, Social)" produced by DAMDI Publishing Co of Seoul, South Korea.
With a focus on sustainable and affordable housing, Donner's designs embrace the surrounding landscape and harness prevailing natural elements to create structures that integrate with their local environment whilst optimizing features that promote sustainable living.
Among his innovative designs that appear in the publication is a classic monolithic structure known as 'Urban Totem'. The building symbolizes a dynamic and vibrant lifestyle, featuring a tower made up of over-lapping mega-bricks that aims to have a 'catalyzing' effect on commercial activity, as well as variable residential units to create a tangible social blend.
In contrast, the pleasant scenery of the surrounding hillsides was the inspiration for 'CD House', another of Donner's designs that features in book. The building's compact footprint and resourceful use of natural light combine to create a house with robust energy efficiency, in harmony with the local environment.
The new book is not the only platform to have featured Donner's work, as another of those designs showcased in two-volume publication was also the subject of a recent article on prestigious architecture website architizer.com.
The 'Butterfly House', a home designed to nestle among the green hills outside Seoul, was cited by architecture blogger Zoe Cooper in her article 'The Butterfly Effect: 7 reinterpretations of a Mid-Century Classic' as a striking modern example of the iconic architectural feature.
