April 13, 2017: Canadian University Dubai’s Art-X-Press Exhibition ended with an awards ceremony that discussed student’s artwork, as well as performances by two local artists and the presentation of student’s short films.
The ceremony kicked off with a slideshow featuring some of the student artwork that had been on display during the week. Portraits of colorful tears of joy, reaching hands formed from poetry and a 3-D flamenco dancer were shown and their inspiration explained by the artist.
Following the presentation, students were treated to a powerful performance by Emirati/Japanese poet Afra Atiq, who urged students to follow their passions. Atiq, who was the first poet to receive the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) Creativity Award, also acted as judge for the exhibition.
Another judge, Fadwa Al Qasem, an author of eight books, as well as short stories in Arabic and English, and a popular YouTube channel, talked to the audience about the importance of playing, while painting a portrait of a face that she donated to the university.
After a short speech by the third judge, Mexican artist and civil engineer Jose Toldeo, student films were presented, including a powerful piece on depression and suicide by Asad Siddique, time-lapse drawings by Azhar Carrim and some films highlighting women’s empowerment by Nadia Tarek.
Awards were presented to Shaikha Salem, Mohammed Al-Qudsi and Pamela Sapitan for their paintings. The winners in the photography competition were Mohamed Ihab Ismail, Mohamed Omar El Khair and Azhar Zahid Carrim, and the film makers awarded were Mohammad Asadullah Parvez Siddique, Azhar Zahid Carrim and Nadia Tarek.
