Career Development Workshops Prepare Students for the World of Work

October 13th, 2015: Students at Canadian University Dubai (CUD) have been benefitting from top tips on how to stand out from the crowd during a series of career development workshops organized by the Student Affairs’ Student Success Centre.

In the first of two recent sessions, CUD Lecturer, Ms. Farah Albash, and Director of Human Resources, Mr. Hennie Ferreira, revealed the top 20 most commonly asked questions at an interview, and discussed how to prepare for that all-important first encounter with an employer.

Stressing the significance of prior preparation to a successful interview, Ms. Albash spoke about the importance of researching the organization, evaluating one’s own strengths and weaknesses, and preparing responses to some of the more frequently asked questions.

In the second session of the series, business communications expert and CUD Lecturer, Ms. Orsi Urban, demonstrated how a well-crafted CV can be the key to landing a dream job. Ms. Urban advised students to identify their unique skills and talents and map them against the core competencies that employers are looking for. She also discussed how creating a strong presence on platforms such as LinkedIn can help complement a winning CV.

The series of career development workshops are part of an extensive range of services provided by the Student Success Centre to equip CUD students with the skills and professional attributes required to succeed in the world of work. The Centre also offers academic support and tutoring, facilitates personal and professional development programs, and organizes an annual career fair that connects students with employers in the local and international labour market.
