CUD Artist’s Designer Portrait Wows Guests at Arab Fashion Week

November 5th, 2015: Canadian University Dubai (CUD) artist in residence, Mr. Sylvain Tremblay, has wowed guests at the Arab Fashion Week gala dinner with an astonishing live performance that paid tribute to one of the legends of the design world.

Tremblay employed a brand new artistic technique to create a spectacular image of world-renowned designer, Yves Saint Laurent, in front of more than 200 local and international fashion industry professionals at the Park Hyatt, Dubai.

Departing from his usual materials of glue and sand, Tremblay used the unconventional combination of wax and coconut powder to produce his latest piece. Starting with the wax to create the portrait outline, which remained invisible to the eye, he then invited members of the audience to reveal the image by spraying the coconut powder over the canvas, to uncover the finished portrait of the fashion icon.

Always in search of new materials and techniques, Tremblay even surprised himself with his latest method. He said, “With live performances you have to think about the environment as well as the subject. For this venue I was looking for something easier to work with than glue and sand. I actually went searching for inspiration in the supermarket this time, and after trying out a few options, wax and coconut provided the best results.”

The inaugural edition of the Arab Fashion Week, which is now set to become biannual event, also celebrated the wider world of art. Alongside the gala dinner was an exhibition that featured some of Tremblay’s recent works, including a piece from his blue horse collection and a unique painting of the iconic Dubai skyline.
