CUD Community Comes Together to Celebrate Student Success

January 21st, 2016: Faculty, staff and students from Canadian University Dubai (CUD) have come together to celebrate the success of engineering students Ahmed Farrag, Amro Mosaad, Ahmad Nofal, Khawla Bouhemady and Nikita Mankovskii, following their triumph in the UAE finals of the Robotics Challenge.

At a presentation held in the University atrium, the winning team was honored by University President, Dr. Karim Chelli, with the award of certificates and prizes to celebrate their competition victory. Hosted by the Emirates Science Club, the contest brought together groups of students from across the UAE to assemble and program their robotic kits to effectively complete a range of remote-control and autonomous tasks, set within time and space constraints.

Mentored by Dr. Sherif Moussa, Associate Professor in the School of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology, the five students are among the founding members of the first CUD Robotics Club, which was formed at the start of the 2015-16 academic year, and secured victory in its very first competitive event.

Speaking about their achievement, Dr. Moussa said, “Though the club hadn’t been together very long, I had every confidence in the team and their abilities. The enthusiasm and dedicated they demonstrated while preparing for and during the competition was outstanding.”

Presenting the awards, Dr. Chelli paid tribute to the initiative and invention demonstrated by the Club. He said, “At top universities around the world, clubs are the breeding ground for innovation, research and development, and this is a culture we promote at CUD. I am delighted that this group has been established and I look forward to celebrating more successes in the future.”

Speaking on behalf of the students at the event, third year telecommunication engineering student, Khawla, said, “The competition was a great experience – we learned a lot and had fun in the process. I would certainly encourage other students to get involved in clubs as an enjoyable way to develop their practical skills.”
