May 12th, 2016: Research conducted by Canadian University Dubai (CUD) design professor, Ms. Sophie Johnson, has been featured in a publication produced to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UAE Association of Professional Interior Designers (APID).
The feature, which discusses design trends and concerns for ‘new’ Arab cities, is based on research among senior designers and company owners around the region. In it, Ms. Johnson reveals the thinking of design professionals and practitioners on what the next decade holds for the industry in the Arab world.
The research is set in the context of a region caught between a variety of paradigms in terms of design, and the challenge this presents in respecting its culture and heritage, while embracing modernity and the thirst for invention.
According to Ms. Johnson’s findings, this presents a number of challenges for the future of the industry, including education – of both the professionals and the clients – and incorporating the notion of sustainability in project design.
In terms of opportunities, Ms. Johnson reveals, “With regard to the future and what will have the biggest impact on the design industry, it is without question technology. From the way the office works to the way we design and present to clients.”
She continues, “The impact it has had on the process in the last decade is fascinating; it will continue to evolve over the coming years. 4D printing is the contemporary buzzword in the industry and as yet we are not sure of its full potential.”
With technology as a key driver, Ms. Johnson’s article concludes that the future of interior design in the region looks bright, and now is a good time to evaluate, take stock and to regulate the industry.
Summing up, she says, “Associations like APID have a real opportunity to make a positive contribution to the history of the industry in this region by solidifying connections between education and the industry. With a stronger relationship between industry and education, the region could have a new generation of home grown talent with a genuine concern to improve the lives of all.”
The APID publication also features an overview of the organization and it achievements to date, along with other insights into regional industry trends.
