December 12th, 2016: Students from the School of Architecture and Design at Canadian University Dubai (CUD) have exhibited their unique interpretation of the journey of life at the Light Middle East Conference 2016.
Supervised by Chair of Interior Design, Mr. Serkan Gunay, and working in partnership with Dubai-based consultancy, Delta Lighting Solutions, the team of Henrique Wagner, Naba Al Beer, Madina Beisembina, Fereshteh Kalantari, Devanshi Jakhiya, and Acsah David, came together to apply original and creative techniques in the use of light to take visitors on a journey representing the constantly evolving experiences of life.
Viewers of the installation were first greeted by a tunnel of parallel light, leading the way and representing the joyous beginnings of life. An increase in the density of light was used to represent the changes in life and a shift in frame direction marked the disorientation and fear that we experience as we transition through different phases of existence.
An umbrella was used to represent the protection of maturing self-confidence, from which visitors moved on to a star-lit space, portraying the realization of life’s endless possibilities. The end of the journey was marked by a convex mirror, providing visitors with the opportunity to enhance the view of their past experiences, while still looking forward to the opportunities of the future.
Speaking about what was a unique and challenging experience for the students, Acsah said, “Working with lighting specialists on a practical project was a great opportunity to test our skills. We were able to bring our own elements to the design, as well as draw upon the expertise of lighting designers and engineers to enhance our final presentation.”
The team members saw their installation exhibited at the 11th edition of Light Middle East, hosted at Dubai World Trade Centre, and were awarded certificates of participation for their involvement in the event.
