Engineering Students Learn About the Mobile Revolution

February 24th, 2015: The mobile technology industry will be supporting 35 billion connected devices by 2020 according to Radio-frequency (RF) Specialist Mr. Farris Alhorr, who recently spoke to students from Canadian University Dubai (CUD) about the evolution of wireless communication applications.

Charting the history of the mobile phone industry from the 1G car phone to the current 4G technology, Alhorr explained how escalating consumer demand and improvements in wireless connectivity would significantly multiply the number of smartphone users, which currently stands at 2 billion worldwide. Adding to this the increase in multi-appliance users, the number of connected devices would swell to five times the global population in just five years time, he revealed.

Alhorr, who is a Business Development Manager with leading engineering design software firm, LabVIEW, has spent several years working in the industry and has himself contributed to the evolution of technology with the development of a patented measurement method for over-the-air wireless devices.

Focusing in on the lecture theme ‘Paving the Way to 5G’, Alhorr went on to talk about the need to accelerate innovation to meet the demands of this new ‘ecosystem of connected devices’. He spoke about the measures that would be required to realize the ambitious plans to deploy 5G technology in around six years time, and about the impact mobile platforms such as iOS have had on revolutionizing the use of mobile devices.

The lecture was delivered to students of the University’ Faculty of Engineering, Applied Sciences and Technology as part of CUD’s applied learning curriculum, which enables undergraduate students to interact with industry experts and hear about the latest advances in technology from leading professionals in the field.

At the end of the session, students got the opportunity to show what they had learnt in a quick-fire quiz where the three winning contestants were each awarded a MyDAQ unit.
