October 15th, 2014: A senior professor at one of Dubai's leading universities has been honored with a prestigious award recognizing his outstanding leadership qualities.
Dr. Rommel Sergio, Associate Professor at the Canadian University Dubai (CUD), won an individual accolade at the 2014 Asian Education Leadership Awards (AELA) for his exceptional work as Chair and faculty of human resource management.
The Outstanding Asian Faculty Award in Human Resource Management recognizes Dr. Sergio's core values as a leader, including innovation, strength, knowledge and foresight. Dr Sergio was among 40 elite academics honored at the award ceremony hosted at the Taj Palace Hotel, Dubai, sponsored by Emirates NBD, Tata Consultancy Services, and Gulf Medical University.
The award follows another accolade for excellence in leadership presented to CUD Professor and Chair of the University's E-Business program, Dr Ahmad Jaffar, who was recognized by industry professionals at the World Corporate Universities Congress.
Now in its fourth year, the AELA ceremony - hosted by the Confederation of Businesses and World Education Congress - celebrates academic visionaries who demonstrate the leadership and foresight to deliver excellence in education in Asia. Dr. Sergio was honored alongside leading professors from institutions across the continent, as well as academics based in the UAE.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to win this award," said Dr. Sergio, who has taught at CUD for the last four years. "This recognition is a huge motivation in my ongoing pursuit for excellence in teaching, research, and community service", he concluded.
With over 200 nominations from 49 countries, Dr. Sergio saw off fierce competition in the human resource management category. In selecting him, the judges looked at factors including research publications, teaching effectiveness, awards received in the past, and media coverage obtained.
Dr. Sergio has a distinguished track-record in human resources research, spanning topics such as organizational psychology, emotional intelligence (EI), corporate responsibility and workaholism. Last year he received the Best Paper Award for his presentation on EI at the International Journal of Arts and Sciences conference held at Harvard University.
Having several years' experience as a HR practitioner, Dr. Sergio has a keen focus on research that can be applied in the corporate world, particularly those issues relevant to the region. His recent publications include a study of job performance in the Middle East banking sector.
As his research continues to attract worldwide attention, Dr. Sergio is now looking forward to delivering the keynote speech at this year's International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research in Hong Kong.
