IEEE Student Branch Tours Leading Tech Labs

March 22nd, 2017: Members of the IEEE Student Branch at Canadian University Dubai (CUD) have been given an exclusive insight into some of the innovations emerging from leading international technology labs, as part of two recent site visits by the newly-established group.

During a field trip to the Huawei OpenLab in Dubai Internet City, the students from CUD’s School of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology were able to interact with stat-of-the-art technologies and witness firsthand demonstrations of emerging smart devices.

The visit, hosted by Huawei‘s PR representative in the Emirates, Ms. Grace Zhao, was part of the ongoing collaboration between CUD and the global IT solutions provider, to help empower students through innovation in the context of the UAE’s move towards an information-based economy.

Speaking about the visit, telecommunications major, Yaman Afadar, said, “It was fascinating to see how the experts are applying different aspects of technology to tackle industry-specific challenges such as security, while at the same time working to ease aspects of everyday life, like the development of smart transportation.”

Among the faculty members accompanying the students was Dr. Ons Bouachir, who said, “The tour of Huawei’s OpenLab provided a unique insight for students into how industry is advancing with these technologies and we are immensely grateful to Grace and the team for providing this opportunity.”

Meanwhile, a second fieldtrip saw the CUD Branch visit the Dubai-based labs of tech multinational, Intel. There, the students witnessed how the company is applying its chip technology to develop innovations such as smart buses.

Telecommunications student Huzaifa Alfahl said, “These visits have been really beneficial in helping me to understand more about the innovation process and I’m sure the experience will be beneficial when I come to explore career opportunities in the field.”
