Nigerian Debate

On February 12th at the Dhow Palace Hotel in Bur Dubai the Nigerian Business Council with Titlas Management Group hosted an Inter-Collegiate Nigerian Business Debate Competition. Students Fareeda Shinkafi, Vivian Obembe and Maryam Abdullahi represented CUD. There were four Universities from across the UAE that faced each other in debating which topic was most important for Nigerian economic development. The topics in Group A were the importance of Agriculture (American University of Ras Al Khaima) vs. Rural Development (Wollongong University in Dubai), and Group B topics were, the importance of Transportation ( Canadian University Dubai) and Security (Skyline University in Sharjah).

The Group A winner was Wollongong and Group B winner was Canadian University Dubai. The two groups went back to the microphones and panels of judges and again spoke passionately about the changes that they could make to improve the economy in Nigerian. After all members had spoken the judges called a tie and said that one more question would be asked to one individual member from CUD and Wollongong, based on their individual response they would announce the team winner.

Maryam Abdullahi was chosen to represent the CUD team. The question was: Aside from all the topics that we said were important today, what would you do in the future to change Nigeria's Economy. Maryam responded that her passion lays in finance and she would like to attain her Masters Degree in Finance, move back to Nigeria and become the Minister of Finance. She would implement the financial plans that would support the development of the transportation systems, the rural areas, the agricultural projects and the security systems that are needed to ensure the growth of the Nigerian economy.

We'd like to send out a big congratulations to Maryam Abdullahi, Fareeda Shinkafi and Vivian Obembe for becoming the winners of the first Intercollegiate Nigerian Debate Competition. A big thank you goes out to Farah Kabir, Dr. Mona Mustafa, Mary-Alison Lyman and Temitope Smith for working with the student representatives. If anyone would like to see the trophy it can be found in the Block A Awards case. Students interested in participating in future Nigerian events should see Miss Mary in a1-18.
