The Irrigated Desert
To complement the abaya, which symbolizes Emirati values of grace and continuity, the second garment draws inspiration from the Chinese qipao, a traditional dress associated with refinement, modesty, and cultural identity. The qipao, also known as the cheongsam, traces its origins to the long robes worn by Manchu women during the Qing dynasty. It began as a loose, flowing garment before evolving in 1920s Shanghai into the slim-fitting, high-collared silhouette known today, blending traditional Chinese motifs, such as embroidery and mandarin collars, with contemporary tailoring influences.
