June 27th, 2016: Students of the Bachelor of Communications in Journalism program at Canadian University Dubai (CUD) have been experiencing the real-life operations of a professional newsroom during a recent visit to Dar Al Khaleej publishing in Sharjah.
Guided by the newspaper’s Managing Editor, Mahmood Hasuna, the students were given a revealing insight into the challenges and rewards of working in the dynamic world of journalism. The group received a digital tour of the publication process and learnt about the different approaches to capturing and presenting news. They were also given an overview of the editorial process and an insight into house styles and formats.
Speaking about the experience, third year student Sally Adedalaal said, “This was my first visit to a newspaper and it was interesting to see how all the different sections functioned separately to bring together one paper. I was also fascinated by the technology behind the daily production process.”
Aspiring sports journalist and senior student Iman Fathi Dawod commented, “As journalism students I think it is important that we spend time outside the classroom and get exposure to the professional world. For me the visit provided the opportunity to spend some time with established sports journalists and learn about the different ways they cover events.”
The visit was part of the News Writing and Editing course supervised by Dr. Ghada Abaido, who said, “In an era driven by digital media I think that it has been immensely valuable for the students to return to the roots of journalism and to see how print news is produced and presented.
“They were able to witness the reality of theoretical lessons learnt in the classroom and discover different and innovative ways to find the news, to engage with people, and to deliver their message, all of which will be valuable in their future careers.”
