January 25th, 2017: Canadian University Dubai (CUD) acted as host during a significant event for the UAE’s Filipino community as the Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary, Perfecto Yasay Jr., visited Dubai earlier this week.
Secretary Yasay took to the stage in CUD’s Red Theatre to greet leaders of the Filipino community of Dubai and the Northern Emirates, and to reveal more about the Philippine’s future plans to engage with the Middle East.
The meeting included an announcement by Secretary Yasay that Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte, will visit the UAE, along with other countries in the region, in the coming months, with the aim of conducting negotiations across various government departments.
CUD hosted the gathering as part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in support of the wider Dubai community. Led by Dr. Rommel Sergio, Associate Professor and Chair of Human Resource Management, the University has been collaborating with the Philippine Consulate General to provide support and capacity building among the local Filipino population.
Last year, Dr. Sergio, a led a four-month pro-bono training program for front-line employees who provide counseling and support to afflicted overseas Filipino workers in the UAE. In December he was honoured by President Duterte for his work with the prestigious Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas.
During his visit, Secretary Yasay was greeted by Dr. Sergio and CUD Provost, Dr. Muhammed Kabir.
