Thursday, April 22, 2021: Canadian University Dubai (CUD), in collaboration with Al Wasl Sports Club (AWC), hosted a series of webinars to commemorate the United Nations International Sport for Development and Peace on April 6, 2021.

Organized through CUD’s Department of Sport Management, the aim of these sessions was to provide attendees with an overview of football management in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Topics of discussion included; Club Licensing Management, Professional Football Management, and Sports Marketing in the country.

Pedro Correia, Sport Management Consultant, Al Wasl Sports Club and Commentator, Arabian Gulf League, shared his expertise and knowledge on the UAE football landscape, structure of a professional football club, and the requirements for a club to be officially licensed by the UAE Football Association (UAEFA).

Yousef Al Sayed, ex-player at Shabab Al Ahli Club, and Marketing Manager, Al Wasl Sports Club, shared his experience as a player in the Arabian Gulf League and the sports marketing scene in the country.

Dr. Leonardo Mataruna, Professor, Canadian University Dubai, and Advisor, United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), mediated the debates and promoted the discussion using his experience as Football Commentator in the Arabian Gulf League.

The speakers were impressed by the inquisitive questions asked by the attendees who included CUD students, AWC members, and people from all around the world including UAE, Canada, Saudi Arabian, Qatar, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Brazil, England, and the United States of America.

CUD’s Bachelor of Business Administration in Sports Management prepares students to deal with matters that are unique to the sports industry. They learn to negotiate contracts with players and vendors through athletic valuation, attract crowds to sports events, and coordinate external communication through traditional and digital media, to strengthen the tie between the fans and the team.

CUD and AWC established a partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in April 2021. The MoU represents an ongoing relationship that supports cooperation and engagement between the two parties through various activities, including: internship opportunities, academic-related projects and events, research initiatives, outreach programs and much more.
