CUD Faculty Honoured at International Business Education Conference

December 13th, 2016: Faculty members from the School of Business Administration at Canadian University Dubai (CUD) have been honoured with four separate awards at the International Conference on Business, Education, Engineering and Science, hosted recently in Dubai.

Assistant Professor Dr. Diana Haladay, and Associate Professor Dr. Ahmed Jaffar were awarded in the categories of Best Paper and Best Oral Presentation respectively, while Professor Dr. Chris Enyinda received the Outstanding Global Researcher Award and Chair of Human Resource Management, Dr. Rommel Sergio, was named Outstanding Global Research Leader.

The Awards were conferred by the International Association of Scholarly Publishers, Editors and Reviewers (IASPER), and Cromwell UK, who organized the conference, on the theme of ‘Business, Education, Engineering and Sciences Research: Addressing Challenges, Integrating Disciplines and Strengthening Collaborations’. The Conference attracted 100 participants from 20 nationalities, with the aims of promoting academic integrity in research and publication; disseminating research results for greater utilization; and fostering collaboration among researchers in the development of researches in business, education, engineering and sciences.

Dr. Haladay received the Best Paper in Business Award for her pioneering study on the role of culture and national identities in career development in the UAE and Malaysia. The paper, entitled, ‘The Impact of Demographic Variables on Management Competencies and Career Advancement’ found that gender had little impact upon managerial competencies or career advancement, whereas education did. Dr. Haladay also delivered the opening remarks at the conference, in which she encouraged participants to break the paradigm of stability and ‘do something different every day’.

Speaking about her award-winning study, Dr. Haladay said, “There is limited research on the role of demographics on competencies and career advancement in non-western countries, so I am delighted to be contributing to what is an important agenda in a society as diverse as the UAE. Indeed, CUD itself is a good example of this diversity and it is an honour to represent the University in receiving this Award.”

Each of the Awards was evaluated by an international panel of judges from North America, Europe and East Asia, with the award for Best Oral Presentation being conferred on Dr. Jaffar for his paper, 'On Managing Crowds Safely: A Counter Measure Based on Trail Observation – The United Arab Emirates Case'. Another unique area of research, the study looks into how technology can be harnessed to find alternative ways of managing commuter crowds from a psychological perspective.

With citations of his research spanning countries and continents, and numerous best paper awards to his name, Dr. Enyinda was awarded the title of Outstanding Global Researcher. Also honoured with an invitation to deliver the Conference keynote address, Dr. Enyinda urged the research community to come together in solving emerging societal challenges.

He said, “We – educators and faculty researchers – must endeavor to collaborate in ways that transcend discipline, department, school, college, or university boundaries, to tackle social challenges and drive economic growth; not to do so will be a great disservice to our global society looking for answers to solve existing and emerging problems.”

Speaking about the Award, Dr. Enyinda said, “I am honoured to see so many citations of my research; it is extremely rewarding to know that I have made some contribution to the academic community around the world and it is a privilege to receive this recognition.”

The centre-piece awards for Outstanding Global Research Leader was presented to Dr. Sergio in recognition of the international citations of his work on emotional intelligence, change management, human resources management practices, and work values; among others, since 2001.

A unique Award that is only to be conferred once, it was designed to recognize the exemplary and altruistic contributions of researchers who lead the advancement of research in their home countries, their respective continent and beyond the borders. Dr. Sergio added the Award to a number of accolades he has received for excellence in academic teaching, research and community service.
