November 13th, 2014: Over 40 students from 11 universities have gathered at Canadian University Dubai (CUD) to hear from leading sustainability NGO Emirates Environmental Group (EEG).
Under the theme "Sustainability: The Way Forward", the workshop set out to empower students to incorporate sustainable living habits in their personal lives, in order to make the environment in which they live a sustainable one.
Facilitated by the Student Affairs team at CUD, the workshop heard from Dr. Mohamed Abouleish, a professor at the American University of Sharjah, who spoke about supporting the integration of environmental issues across the curriculum.
In attendance at the event were students from CUD's Environment and Health Club. Mr. Ryan Sisson, a lecturer in the School of Environment and Health Sciences at CUD, said, "The Environment and Health Club, began as an initiative of the School of Environment and Health Sciences and was started last year as part of the DEWA Conservation Award. It encourages students from all disciplines to take an active role in improving environmental health on campus, at home, and in their communities."
Mrs. Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of EEG, explained that this one of a kind event is among the most important educational programs in the country, as it brings together students from across the UAE to share their knowledge, views and opinions with one another.
She stressed that one of the objectives of EEG is the empowerment of youth in environmental issues, by building capacity and providing a proper educational base. The Students' Workshop first began in 2001 and has grown to be one of the highlights of the academic year.
