February 21st, Room C3-12: Dr. Sam Kherat, Adjunct Professor of Robotics at Bradley University, Illinois gave a presentation entitled “On Self Driving Machines.”
He outlined how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have played a tremendous role in the development of autonomous vehicle technologies and how they are making a big impact on off-road, mining and construction applications.
He explained how, in an industry where there is a shortage of skilled operators, there is increased scrutiny on the impact of hazardous or dangerous operations on operator sound and vibration limits.
Dr. Sam Kherat has worked for Caterpillar, Inc. and was founding Manager of Caterpillar’s automation center in Pittsburgh, PA. He was Caterpillar’s Project Manager for the DARPA Grand Challenges and the 2007 Urban Challenge won by the Caterpillar-Carnegie Mellon University team.
He received his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois in 1987 and his Ph.D (1994) in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University, Indiana in 1994.
