FAID students inspired by Expo 2020 Dubai visit

Sunday, November 28, 2021: Canadian University Dubai (CUD) third- and fourth-year Architecture and Interior Design students recently visited Expo 2020 Dubai to seek inspiration for their upcoming design studio projects.

The fourth-year design studio project, "Research Institute for Climate Change", encourages students to select a climate change problem and design promotional spaces such as workshops, activity rooms and exhibition spaces to improve public knowledge about the problems that we are facing today, including global warming, rising sea levels, extreme weather conditions and more. Additionally, the design project includes research and development activities to provide the users of these spaces with opportunities to overcome the identified climate change issues.

Dr. Hamoud Dekkiche, Acting Dean, Faculty of Architecture and Interior Design, Canadian University Dubai said: “Our visit to Expo 2020 Dubai enabled our students to be inspired by innovative exhibition design ideas that use new digital technologies and current discussions about sustainability. Architecture has the potential to provide effective solutions with environmentally friendly design ideas. This was thoroughly displayed in the Mobility and Sustainability pavilions that our students had the opportunity to see.”

The students also visited different pavilions from the various participating countries, to experience each country's approach to the three main themes of Expo 2020 Dubai, “Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability.”

Mr. Serkan Gunay, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Architecture and Interior Design, Canadian University Dubai added: “Our field trip was an opportunity for students to explore new perspectives beyond the classroom, encouraging a more hands-on learning experience while providing them with practical design knowledge.”

For the next five months, Expo 2020 Dubai is welcoming visitors from every corner of the globe to join the making of a new world, bringing together the planet in one place to reimagine tomorrow. Expo 2020 Dubai provides a visually striking, intellectually enlightening, and emotionally inspiring event, with more than 200 participants – including nations, multilateral organizations, businesses, and educational institutions, as well as millions of visitors – gathering with the purpose of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.

Canadian University Dubai will host the University’s 11th Graduation Ceremony at Expo 2020 Dubai on the world’s largest international stage in January 2022. Under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence and Commissioner General of Expo 2020 Dubai, the event will aptly reflect CUD’s growing stature on the international higher education landscape.

The Faculty of Architecture and Interior Design at CUD provides students with the knowledge and tools necessary to become change-makers within the industry. The unique studio experience is central to the teaching model and challenges students to translate the classroom experience into practice through innovative design and entrepreneurial ideas. With the fast-paced evolution of architecture, interior design, and sustainability, students are encouraged to critically analyze situations and develop unique design solutions, while acknowledging the human relationship to plan and design with empathy and responsibility.
