New degree in Sport Management opens doors to booming global industry

June 19th, 2018: A new comprehensive bachelor program (BBA) in Sport Management launched by Canadian University Dubai (CUD) gives students a great opportunity to master the intricacies of the booming global sports industry.

The full-fledged degree program is focused on the business and management aspects of the sporting industry, aimed at providing students with fundamental knowledge and skills centered on accounting, finance, economics, management, operations and supply chain management as well as marketing and the law pertaining to sports organizations. The major can be completed in four years (8 semesters).

Vice Chancellor and President of CUD, Prof. Karim Chelli, commented: “The launch of this specialised Sport Management program was inspired by the importance of sports given by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who has said: “Sports, in the end, are a way of life and can bring a lot of good to the community if we view them positively… Sports teach determination, teamwork, respect for rules, fairness with opponents and humility.”

“The UAE is home to world-class facilities and venues hosting local, regional and international teams and events. In fact, very few cities host as many yearly professional sports events such as: International horse race with highest prize money, Formula One Race, four professional golf tournaments, World Badminton Championships, two professional tennis tournaments, and the list goes on. These events require significant human resources with expertise in the industry. The sporting industry is a multi-billion dollar business in the UAE that promises continued growth as more and more world-class professional and amateur athletes participate in the elite sporting events held annually in Dubai and Abu Dhabi,” commented Dr. Marc Poulin, Assistant Professor/Acting Dean of Faculty of Management, CUD.

The specialization in sports management will equip students with a profound understanding of the issues and practices prevalent in sport management and prepare students for careers in the significant number of sport activities and renowned international competitions from horse and car races, to football, golf, competitions and exhibitions that are currently ongoing and increasing in the UAE.

When seeking careers in sports organizations, graduates from the sports program will have a major competitive advantage over their peers that have general business degrees. Graduates can find careers in a range of fields including: Sports marketing, Sales, Advertising, Sponsorships, Administration and sport management, Sport Facilities Management, Sport events management, Logistics/operations management, Research, Consulting and entrepreneurship, Finance and Accounting.

CUD has a strong sporting tradition, offering students a range of opportunities to participate in recreation and competition across various disciplines throughout the year, as well as promoting elite sportsmanship through its Sporting Excellence scholarship.
