CUD celebrates another significant milestone in interdisciplinary research

Sunday, August 15, 2021: Canadian University Dubai (CUD) is pleased to celebrate yet another significant milestone in our international research efforts with the recent publication of “Machine Learning Based Approach to Exam Cheating Detection", an interdisciplinary article co-authored by Dr. Firuz Kamalov (Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Canadian University Dubai), Dr. Hana Sulieman (Professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, American University of Sharjah) and Dr. David Santandreu Calonge (Associate Professor and Director, Corporate Training, Canadian University Dubai).

The article was published in PLOS ONE, a prestigious SCOPUS-indexed academic journal ranked 30th worldwide by Google Scholar across all disciplines. It can be accessed here.

The article discusses one of the greatest challenges in online education: preserving the academic integrity of student assessments and preventing academic misconduct. The authors propose a novel approach to detect potential cases of cheating on final examinations using machine learning techniques.

This impactful and timely study lays the groundwork for future educational research into outlier detection techniques, as it proposes a complement to commercial plagiarism detection software and possibly a non-intrusive deterrent alternative to highly-polemical remotely-invigilated exams.

As the United Arab Emirates continues to expand its collaborative research efforts, CUD remains committed to contributing to the Nation’s growing knowledge economy and education landscape. This high-quality research collaboration with AUS serves as a testament to our hard work, proving our willingness to build further relationships in the region that will create more opportunities for students and faculty members to grow and prosper in an environment conducive to creativity and innovation.
