May 11th, 2015: Dr. Chan Goog Jeon, Learning and Development Manager of multinational technology firm LG Electronics, has shared his vast experience of leadership and corporate culture, at a workshop for faculty and students held recently at Canadian University Dubai (CUD).
Providing a fascinating insight into how LG has taken its business worldwide, while retaining its unique corporate identity, Dr. Chan spoke about the importance of harmonizing core values with local cultures, to promote engagement and loyalty among its global workforce.
Established in the aftermath of the Korean War, LGE set out to provide the reemerging state with domestically-produced consumer electronics and home appliances. Nearly 60 years on, the company remains clear about its mission to create a happier, better life, embodied in its slogan ‘Life’s Good’. According to Dr. Chan, this positive, people-centred culture remains embedded in the organization’s worldwide operations.
Having worked as a university professor before his tenure with LGE, Dr. Chan had conducted extensive research into leadership, learning development and corporate culture. He commented, “It is the relationship between leaders and employees that is the key to motivating and retaining a workforce. Employees should feel listened to, cared about and invested in. A good leader doesn’t work for the brand, they work for their people.”
Going on to discuss LGE’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, Dr. Chan gave an overview of one of the organization’s recent projects, ‘Hope Village’, which aims to support the holistic development of a community in Africa, through education and sustainable resource initiatives.
As the global leader in the manufacture of household appliances, LGE is also at the forefront of the industry in terms of marketing and customer relations, and Dr. Chan shared details of some of the company’s latest innovations in this field, including the development of a device to track consumer behaviour in retail outlets, to inform product placement.
Facilitated by CUD’s Corporate Training Department, it is anticipated that the workshop will result in future research collaborations between Dr. Chan and the University’s School of Business Administration.
