March 15th, 2016: Canadian University Dubai (CUD) was among a number of institutions that recently came together to discuss the creation of a new UAE Think Tank on clinical and educational interventions through music.
The event saw representatives from Khalifa University, Strathclyde University, and Al Ain Technology University, as well as independent researchers and professionals, discuss the art and science of music therapy, and how it can be used in educational and clinical contexts.
Hosted by CUD, the discussions were Chaired by Dr. Efthymios Papatzikis, Assistant Professor of Educational Neuroscience in Music and Sound, and Co-Chaired by Dr. Stefane Mostafa, Professor and Director of the School of Graduate Studies and Dean of the School of Environment and Health.
Guest speaker was Miss Evangelia Papanikolaou, Music Therapist, Scientific Director of SONORA, and PhD candidate at Aalborg University, Sweden, who discussed the two major music therapy schools of practice – interactive and receptive therapeutics – and how they apply in a clinical context.
The proceedings concluded with discussions on how the partners could move towards the creation of an official Think Tank in Clinical and Educational Interventions through Music in the UAE.
Speaking about the event, Dr. Papatzikis said, “Scientific theory and practices connecting brain, psychology and music have been vastly expanded over the past few years in various clinical and educational fields, while research is also flourishing in major hospitals, universities, research and educational centers.
"However, an informed base for the creation of a strong infrastructure to join scientists with educators and clinicians has yet to be established. With these discussions, we have established a solid initial foundation to effectively develop music research, study and practice in the wider UAE region.”
